Visitors come to the United Kingdom for many reasons: to see family and friends, to undertake sightseeing, to attend specific events, or to participate in business meetings. When applying for a visitor visa, it is essential that applicants provide genuine information together with all required documents. At Lexmark Legal, we offer clear and comprehensive guidance on visitor visa applications, ensuring that all requirements are met and that the process is as smooth as possible.
Nationals of some countries (referred to as non-visa nationals) are permitted to visit the UK without applying for a visa in advance, provided that they satisfy the conditions of entry at the border. Nationals of other countries (referred to as visa nationals) must apply for and obtain a visitor visa before travelling. Visa national countries include India, Pakistan, China, and Sri Lanka.
Our specialist solicitors can advise you, based on your circumstances and nationality, whether you require a visa to enter the UK. Please note that if you are seeking entry to another European country, the requirements and procedures differ and are governed by that country’s own rules.
All applicants must satisfy the “genuine visitor” requirement, meaning that they must show:
- that they intend to leave the UK at the end of their visit;
- that they will not live in the UK for extended periods through frequent or successive visits;
- that they will not undertake work or study unless expressly permitted under the visitor rules; and
- that they have sufficient funds and suitable accommodation for the duration of their stay, without recourse to public funds.
Short-term visitor visas are normally granted for up to six months. These are suitable for those intending a short stay in the United Kingdom. In limited circumstances, such as private medical treatment, a visitor visa may be granted for up to 11 months.
Applicants who can demonstrate a history of compliance with immigration requirements may apply for a long-term visitor visa, which may be valid for two years, five years, or ten years. However, holders of long-term visitor visas may not remain in the UK for more than 180 days in any 12-month period.
