Recent figures from the Home Office about asylum claims in the UK make interesting reading. Asylum claims are currently running at about 29,000 per year. In the most recent period, up until September 2015, 41 per cent of asylum claims to the Home Office were successful at the initial decision stage. This figure is higher than figures for recent previous years.

The figures also show that, where the application was refused and the claimant appealed to the Immigration Tribunal, 19 per cent of appeals were successful.

Figures like these help to contextualise the asylum issue, but it is important to bear in mind that the overall figures conceal huge differences in success rates between applicants from different countries.
